OUR WEEK IN PARIS
Happy New Year / Bonne Année

Bonjour!
I hope you've all had a delightful start to the new year. I wish you all the best for 2025, which I hope will be filled with joy, success, and, hopefully, trips to Paris!
We’ve had a very low-key week here, enjoying the quieter streets of Paris after spending quality time with family. It’s been a wonderful opportunity to soak in the city.
This week, I dusted off an old Olympus camera that Laura had tucked away since 2014. I’ve been capturing the city in grainy, lo-fi snapshots. There's something wonderfully raw and authentic about these images, which perfectly match the Parisian vibe.
One of our highlights was a visit to La Fontaine de Belleville, where we enjoyed our first coffee of 2025. Nestled in the 10th arrondissement, this no-frills spot is a true local gem. With its quintessentially Parisian atmosphere and a breakfast menu that hits the spot, it's a must-visit for anyone exploring the area.

As I prepare for an upcoming photography workshop I'm co-hosting in Paris, I've been exploring my archives for unique perspectives of the city. This image, captured from the top of Montparnasse Tower, offers a breathtaking view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower prominently in the landscape. Seeing familiar sights from new angles is exciting, and I look forward to sharing these locations during the workshop.

VISITING PARIS
Les Soldes - Winter Sales in Paris

As the holiday season ends, Paris gears up for one of its most anticipated shopping events: the Winter Sales! Running from January 8 to February 4, 2025, this month-long extravaganza offers incredible discounts and is a must for any shopping enthusiast.
A Tradition Steeped in History
The French sales, known as "Les Soldes," have a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Originally established to help merchants clear out old stock, they have evolved into a bi-annual event, occurring once in winter and once in summer. These sales are regulated by the French government, ensuring that shoppers receive genuine discounts.
What to Expect
During the Winter Sales, expect to find amazing deals across all categories—from high fashion and luxury brands to local boutiques and department stores. Whether you’re hunting for designer pieces or unique finds, Paris offers something for every taste and budget.

Timing is Key: Visit early in the sale for the best selection or wait until the end for deeper discounts.
Explore Different Neighborhoods: Each area of Paris offers a unique shopping experience, from the chic boutiques of Le Marais to the grand department stores on Boulevard Haussmann.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience Parisian shopping at its finest. Whether you're a seasoned shopper or a curious traveler, the Winter Sales are an adventure in themselves!

PARIS HIDDEN GEMS
Discovering Edwart Chocolatier

While strolling through the Marais, make sure to pop into Edwart Chocolatier—a delightful stop on my Marais walking tour. This small shop might be easy to miss, but the chocolate is anything but ordinary.
Note: They have three more boutiques in Paris, but the Marais location is the one I visit.
Edwart is all about creativity and quality. Their chocolates are crafted with unique ingredients like Madras curry and combawa bark, making each bite an adventure. It's the perfect spot for those who love trying new flavors.
Whether you love chocolate or just need a sweet break, Edwart offers something special. It's a fun and memorable taste of Paris.

JOIE DE VIVRE
Embrace Winter with Beef Bourguignon

As the chill of January sets in, there's nothing like indulging in a hearty dish that warms the soul. Beef Bourguignon, a classic French comfort food, is perfect for bringing a little Joie de Vivre into your home this winter.
The Recipe
Creating this rich stew is a rewarding experience. Start with tender chunks of beef, slowly simmered in red wine with onions, carrots, and mushrooms. The key is patience, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully over time. The aroma alone is enough to transport you to a cozy French bistro.
A Taste of History
Originating from the Burgundy region, Beef Bourguignon was once a humble peasant dish but transformed over time into a beloved staple of French cuisine. Its history is as rich as its flavor, embodying the essence of French culinary tradition. Each bite tells a story of warmth, comfort, and the joy of sharing good food.
Perfect for Winter
There's something magical about savoring this dish in the heart of winter. It's not just about the warmth it provides but also the comfort and joy of sharing a meal with loved ones. Pair it with a glass of Burgundy wine, and you've got a perfect evening.
For those eager to try their hand at this classic dish, I've provided a traditional recipe. Click the button below to download and bring a taste of France to your kitchen.

A big thank you to our reader, John Sherman, for sharing this photo of the main street running through ĂŽle Saint-Louis, one of my favorite neighborhoods in Paris. Despite its central location, this charming area remains residential and quiet, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Fun fact: ĂŽle Saint-Louis is the only neighborhood in Paris without a metro stop, adding to its unique charm.
