📸 I've been diving back into “lofi” photography with our old point n’ shoot camera from 2014. I took our little Lion on a fun adventure to the Eiffel Tower this week. After snapping some photos of him, he made his first portrait of Papa! On our way back, we stumbled upon the Christmas Market at the Tuileries Garden. Here's a secret: it's blissfully empty on the last day! We had a blast with a few rides and indulged in some tasty treats before heading home.

This black and white photograph, taken a couple of years ago, captures a view of the Eiffel Tower from Montmartre, near Sacré-Cœur. The winter branches frame the monument, evoking a sense of stillness and reflection. Perhaps the chill of winter draws me to the simplicity of monochrome, as this week's newsletter features several of them.

PARIS HIDDEN GEMS
Discovering the Quiet Charm of Cour Damoye

Cour Damoye, tucked away near the lively Place de la Bastille, has roots going back to the 18th century. Originally, it served as a hub for craftsmen and artisans, which is reflected in its quaint workshops and studios that still line the street today. This passage has managed to retain its historic charm, offering a glimpse into the Paris of the past.

Over the years, it has become a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. Its picturesque setting, with ivy-covered facades and charming details, makes it a perfect backdrop for photography and filming.

A PEEK INTO HISTORY
The Birth of the Baguette

Ah, the baguette—a symbol of French culture and a staple of Parisian life. Its origins are steeped in both practicality and legend. One fascinating tale dates back to the construction of the Paris Métro. With workers carrying knives, there was a concern about safety, as tensions and fights could easily escalate. To address this, a bread loaf that could be torn by hand was preferred, and thus, the baguette's long, slender form became ideal for breaking without a blade.

Beyond its intriguing backstory, the baguette's rise in popularity is often linked to a 1920 law that prohibited bakers from working before 4 a.m. To meet the breakfast rush, they needed a bread that baked quickly, and the baguette fit the bill perfectly.

Tore Johnson — Girl with Baguette, Paris, 1940′s

In France, the baguette is governed by specific regulations to preserve its authenticity. According to the "décret pain" of 1993, a traditional baguette must be made with only four ingredients: wheat flour, water, salt, and yeast. No additives or preservatives are allowed, ensuring its genuine taste and quality.

Today, the baguette remains a beloved part of French cuisine, celebrated for its crispy crust and soft interior. It's more than just bread; it's a piece of history, a daily delight, and a quintessential part of the Parisian experience. Whether fact or folklore, the baguette's story adds a charming layer to its legacy.
